Case Study: Utranazz Innovation Enables Makehappen to Deliver Faster, Greener Fibre Installation

Overview

With broadband now an essential utility—especially as hybrid and remote work expand—Upp Broadband and Norfolk County Council commissioned Makehappen to deliver the infrastructure required to bring high-quality fibre broadband to communities across Norfolk. The first phase focused on the region in and around Burnham Market.

To complete the project efficiently, sustainably, and with minimal traffic disruption, Makehappen required a bespoke concrete-mixing solution that could keep pace with extremely tight overnight work windows. They turned to Utranazz, Concrete Equipment Specialists.

The Challenge

Makehappen was tasked with installing 3.5 km of fibre within a major carriageway and bus route, with strict constraints:

• Work allowed only overnight, from 7 pm to 7 am, for two consecutive weeks.
• Minimal disruption to daytime traffic flow.
• Environmentally conscious approach, limiting heavy vehicle movements and unnecessary materials handling.
• Each night needed to complete a new section of trench, duct installation, filling, and reinstatement.

To achieve all this, Makehappen required a highly specialised concrete mixing solution that could:

1. Store materials for a new rapid-set, self-levelling Instafill concrete capable of curing within one hour.
2. Batch and mix materials directly on site.
3. Pump the mixed concrete precisely into trenches.
4. Weigh materials accurately for consistent batching.
5. Operate as a mobile, truck-mounted system.

Utranazz’s Brief

Makehappen approached Utranazz to design and deliver two custom-built concrete mixers that met all operational demands while fitting into the fast-paced nightly workflow.

Key requirements included:

• Large storage capacity for Instafill powder.
• High-volume water capacity.
• Integrated batching, mixing, weighing, and pumping systems.
• Full mobility for use across different nightly work zones.

The Utranazz Solution

Upon receiving the brief, Utranazz collaborated closely with Kimera, its Italian manufacturing partner. Together:

1. Design proposals were developed, refined, and reviewed through site visits and joint workshops.
2. Instafill material samples were tested with the prototype designs to ensure compatibility.
3. A final design was selected based on real-world testing and operational needs.

Introducing the “Innomixers”

Utranazz delivered two custom-engineered Innomixers, each designed specifically for Makehappen’s rapid-set reinstatement process.

Key Features

• 7 m³ cement bins to hold large volumes of Instafill powder.
• High-capacity water tanks to support continuous batching.
• Specialised built-in worm pumps for smooth, accurate delivery into trenches.
• On-board weighing system for precision measurement and consistent mix quality.
• Fully truck-mounted for mobility across nightly work sites.

The Innomixers allowed Makehappen to batch, mix, and pump Instafill directly on site, creating a completely self-contained, efficient system. Instafill was loaded using a 7-ton Weigh Hopper, also supplied by Utranazz.

Project Results

Using the bespoke Innomixers, Makehappen drastically simplified the fibre-installation process:

• Trench cutting, duct installation, fine fill, concrete batching, mixing, and pumping were all completed within a single overnight shift.
• Instafill’s one-hour cure time enabled reinstatement before the roadway reopened at 7 am.
• The team installed 3.5 km of fibre in just 14 nights, meeting all environmental and traffic-management targets.
• A fully self-contained system reduced material transportation and site impact.

Outcome

Makehappen completed an ambitious infrastructure project safely, quickly, and sustainably—delivering critical broadband access to Norfolk communities—thanks to Utranazz’s engineering innovation.
