Case Study: Utranazz Supplies Bespoke Demountable Concrete Mixers for the Clyde Wind Farm
Overview
Utranazz, the UK’s leading specialist in concrete equipment, partnered with civil engineering contractor C A Blackwell (Contracts) Ltd to deliver four custom-engineered 6m³ demountable concrete mixers for the Clyde Wind Farm Project—Europe’s largest consented onshore wind farm.
With 152 turbines and an overall generating capacity of 350MW, the project required an efficient, adaptable concrete production solution that could operate in challenging terrain while supporting the batching and discharge of 21,000 cubic metres of concrete on the southern section of the site.
Challenge
Blackwell needed a concrete mixing system capable of:
- Operating on steep, uneven terrain common to large-scale wind farm sites
- Integrating seamlessly with existing machinery to minimise costs
- Supporting high-volume concrete output within tight project timelines
- Allowing easy switching between mixer bodies and standard dump bodies after project completion
Their fleet already included Bell 30D Mark V Articulated Dump Trucks, offering a potential cost-saving platform—if a compatible mixer solution could be developed.
Solution: Bespoke 6m³ Demountable Mixer Units
Utranazz engineered fully self-contained 6m³ mixer modules designed specifically to mount onto Blackwell’s existing Bell articulated dump trucks.
Key Design Features
- Demountable Frame System
The mixers can be quickly installed or removed, enabling Blackwell to reinstate the trucks’ original skip bodies once the project ends. - Modified Mixing & Discharge Height
Due to the naturally high chassis of the Bell trucks, Utranazz redesigned the mixer’s discharge system to bring controls and access points to an operator-friendly height. - Safe Access Platform
A custom platform and ladder assembly was constructed to provide secure access for cleaning, inspection, and routine maintenance. - Complete Self-Containment
Every unit was engineered as an independent mixing system, eliminating the need for major truck modifications and ensuring operational reliability onsite.
The custom manufacturing process took eight weeks from design through to final delivery.
Outcome
By repurposing their existing articulated dump truck fleet, Blackwell achieved:
- Significant cost savings
No need to acquire specialized concrete trucks for a single project. - Operational flexibility
Quick demounting after project completion maximizes long-term equipment use. - Improved efficiency
The custom mixers enabled safe, rapid batching and discharge across challenging terrain.
This collaboration demonstrates Utranazz’s capability to deliver highly customised concrete equipment solutions that support unique engineering and environmental requirements.
“We were delighted to be able to work with Blackwell on this unusual project. We specialise in providing custom-built concrete equipment to meet the most demanding and exceptional requirements from our customers.”
